Your TEETH will ERODE!!!
Teeth erode at any pH lower than 5.5. pH refers to the 'potential of the hydrogen' because chemically, the hydrogens accompanying acids are what causes their toxic effects. The lower the pH, the more acidic. Neutral is a pH of 7, examples are saliva and pure water. Basic is any pH greater than 7, like liquid plumber or windex.
Soft drinks, namely Coca-Cola, have a pH of 2.9-3.3. That means every time you have thrown your head back and taken a refreshing gulp of 'your poison' (HAHAHAHA), you have been slowly degrading the enamel that protects those defenseless pearly whites!
Another item to watch out for: vinegar!! Vinegar is worse than pop! Vinegar has a pH of 2.2! And number one acidic badboy of common household materials is
Limes.
Believe it or not, limes are WORSE than lemons.
(I'm actually getting all this from a website and they put the battery as the most acidic common household material but I have omitted that here since nobody will ever drink a battery.)
Lemons are the runner ups with a pH of 2.2-2.4.
Limes have a pH of 1.8-2.0.
Yowza! Unless I have decided to execute all my teeth, I don't think I will ever go near another lime or lemon, for that matter!
Now, lets talk CALORIES!
Did you know?
1 pound of body fat is equal to 3,500 calories. To lose ONE pound of body fat, you need to CREATE a deficit of 3,500 over a period of time. Ideally, the best way to do this is to lose 1 pound a week by making a deficit of 250 calories in your diet and burning off 250 calories by exercising, PER DAY. You lose 500 calories per day, which will give you 3,500 calories in one week.
To go about starting a diet, you need to make a list of all the foods you consume throughout the day. One's diet usually doesn't change extremely so this shouldn't be so hard. Next, is to find out how many calories each food contains, with respect to portion sizes.
Few examples:
1 small apple - 55
1 medium avocado - 322 (WTF?!?!?!?!)
1 pomegranate - 105
1 banana - 105
1 cup of vanilla ice cream - 145
1 cup of skim milk - 83
1 cup of chocolate milk - 208
1 cup of low fat yogurt - 137
1 can of sweetened cola - 136
1 cup of coffee - 2 (WTF??!!)
1 can of regular beer - 153
1 can of light beer - 103
1 can of ginger ale - 124
Taco Bell Original Beef Taco - 184
Wendy's Classic Single Hamburger - 464
Wendy's French Fries - 507
McDonald's Sausage Egg McMuffin - 446
McDonald's Big Mac - 563
McDonald's Cheeseburger - 313
McDonald's Fillet o Fish - 400
McDonald's Fries - 522 <-------- WOW
4 McDonald's Chicken McNuggets - 169 (not bad)
Alright, so all who agree that fast food surely equals death, raise their hands.
(Both my hands are up.)
I just feel that if everybody stopped eating out, we wouldn't be reading headlines like, 'Nine million Australians are a Ticking Fat Bomb.' Eating in saves you money and doesn't create an excess of calories!
I mean, if some newspaper threw in the headline, "CANADA IS SINKING DUE TO OVERWEIGHT POPULATION," I would surely make an effort to work against it!!
HEALTHY IS IN! CHOOSE LIFE!!

Senses
A friend of mine recently received surgery on her nose to help her breathe better. The shape wasn't altered at all; it was purely for health. She had been breathing through her mouth for basically her entire life. I saw her this past Tuesday and wow, the stories she would tell. Because she hadn't been able to breathe through her nose, her sense of taste had also been affected. Now, she explains, everything just tastes and smells so different! I was pretty amazed at the impact the surgery had. Breathing through your nose is definitely something we all take for granted. I just tried breathing through only my mouth and it's definitely weird and HARD. My friend talked about eating grilled salmon, spaghetti, chocolate, etc. This got me thinking to other sense we all take for granted.
I saw a girl waiting at the bus stop with me and she was blind. I don't know if she's been blind for her entire life, but I'm assuming so because she definitely looked younger than me. Imagine trying to explain the colour blue to her. When she touches things, she can only imagine what it would look like. Come to think of it, I wonder what images a blind person could imagine. If she were to touch her hands, she knows there are 5 fingers and there are these hard things called nails at the end of each. But essentially, she would not ever really know what her fingers looked like. Now, there is a high possibility she isn't completely blind. Most people aren't. But the few that are, I wonder what images would come up in their minds. I mean, if they had had a glimpse of at least one thing in their life, then other images could be made up from that. But, if all they had been seeing was black (or white; I don't know what 'colour' a completely blind person would experience), how could they imagine anything? Or dream, for that matter. I wonder what they dream...
Basically, I guess we shouldn't take these things for granted. Imagine never being able to see the person you really care about, never being able to see colours, or how pretty you really are. Well, if the whole world wasn't able to see, I guess most of our values would lie elsewhere...

Manchu Wok
Everybody loves Manchu Wok. No matter what you're craving while scanning an entire food court of restaurants, you always linger at Manchu Wok a little longer. Everybody loves good old, Amercanized, oily Chinese food.
Anyways, everybody has also dealt with Taco Bell. After 2 tacos and an hour of digestion, burping still brings back a medley of processed beef and gastric juices. Gross.
So, it's a Saturday and I'm stuck at my dad's convenience store in the mall working from 4 to 9. I usually run into a variety of characters while working, sometimes workers that come by for some lottery tickets or drinks. This one man came in, after a meal I assumed since he was carrying a bag of chips and a pop, and asked for some cigarettes.
Now, I don't like to generalize or stereotype people, but from the way he presented himself and spoke, I could confidently say that he was gay. I gave him his cigarettes and we were waiting for the debit machine to go through and I noticed his phone which was pretty cool looking. We started talking about it and different internet plans and how much they suck. That's all good. Except he was burping.
"Excuse me. I'm so sorry. I just ate."
You think?!!??!
The worst part was I immediately knew what he had eaten. The deadly Manchu Wok. The smell wafted towards me; a toxic cloud of sweet and sour pork, chow mein, and fried rice. Oh good Lord, deliver me from this stench of garbage and digestive enzymes and stomach acid.
I thought it would be like when somebody passed gas in a public area. You smell it for like a second and its gone. No. Not this. This smell lingered around my nose as if to taunt me.
All I could think was, "Omg, I am going to throw up. Omg. I'm going to gag."
Maybe you don't understand. This smell was horrendous. Think of a black garbage bag full of Manchu Wok food, throw in some stomach acid and enzymes and let it sit in the sun for 30 minutes. Now open the bag up and take a good whiff.
The man finally left. I grabbed the nearest spray thing (which was only Windex) and proceeded to just spray the air. Like I care if its not an air freshener.
OH! This man works at Sterling. I remember his tag. It didn't have his name though. I hope he never comes back after eating Manchu Wok. It should be a crime to let loose foul stenches from one's body.

Birthmarks
Everybody growing up HAS heard of the rumour: "If you don't have a birthmark, you're an alien." AHAHAHAHA
sigh...public school
Anyway, I was riding on the bus today and I let my mind wander (as it usually does) to random things and it finally landed on the birthmark. Mine, if anybody hasn't noticed, is on the right side of my face (my right) and it is actually quite conspicuous. I mean, there are horror stories about people with all consuming marks on la visage, and I guess everybody has been turning a blind eye to this blemish (thank you for sparing me many awkward moments; however, try and refrain from looking at it when talking to me).
I proceeded to Google this birthmark issue and landed on Wikipedia (obviously).
"Birthmarks are called voglie in Italian, antojos in Spanish, and wiham in Arabic; all of which translate to "wishes" because, according to folklore, they are caused by unsatisfied wishes of the mother during pregnancy. For example, if a pregnant woman does not satisfy a sudden wish or craving for strawberries, it's said that the infant might bear a strawberry mark."
(Birthmarks are often called 'strawberry marks' because they may be red.)
So, If I take this example and apply it to myself...I can come up with a few hypothetical situations:
1. My mother had something on her face but for the life of her couldn't find a washroom or a wetnap to get it off.
2. My mother had a lot of ddae on that side of her face but could not for the life of her find a ddae mi ri.
3. My mother saw something on the right side of my dad's face and wanted to rub it off but he wouldn't let her.
In any case, I am left with this blemish of 'a localized imbalance in factors controlling the development of blood vessels.'
What is awesome about this article is they present a chart with all the different types of birthmarks existing, AND the slang names coined to match the appearances of each. Following are a few that I just found hilarious:
"The Stork Bite" or "Angel's Kiss"
Found mostly on the neck, head, or top lip and a pinkish colour (because if you know how babies are made, those 3 areas make it really easy for a stork to carry la babe).
"Mongolian Blue Spot"
First of all, HAHAHAHAHAHAHA. They are bluish and bruise-like. They are also found on the lower back or bum. HAHAHAHAHA. -I have seen one before. Not on myself.-
"Cafe au Lait Spot"
These are light brown, milk coffee coloured marks and are the most common. I, myself, am in possession of the 'Cafe au Lait Spot.' And dang, they do not fade with age. Also, having two is common.
In conclusion, my general audience, that is the birthmark. Hopefully many of you will have a newfound appreciation of that pesky little blemish that may be on your bum, face, or anywhere in between.

The End
And so 3rd year comes to a close. I started off strong and ended weak. Really weak. Like failed-the-last-two-exams weak. Whatever. whatever.
I'll be off to Europe in less than two weeks. THAT should be fun (not).
Anyway, recapping this year. It's been pretty crazy. I was able to see how high and how low I could get. I noticed that after I started university, ever year that passes by makes me really FEEL like another year has gone by. I mean, when you're in highschool and your birthday passes by, you barely feel any different. But I find that after university, when you say you're in 3rd year, it really feels like you've got 730 days worth of experience under your belt. When I look back to the stuff I was doing in 1st and 2nd year, I can't help but to think, 'MAN! That crap was so EASY. Why did I skip class when I could've been hitting easy 90's?' What makes me feel even older is that I had a fob friend who had to leave after our 1st year to go to the Korean army. He would have to stay for 2 entire years and back then, 2 years seemed so far away. I would try to imagine what I would be like, how much I would've changed. When I think about seeing my fob friend comes back in September, I wonder what he would think. What was his last image of me in 1st year? Is it all that different from what I look like now?
The weather's been really nice lately. I just want to lie on the grass with my friend and look at the clouds all day. We've been to the park lately too. There's this one path that goes right alongside the river and it's just so nice to walk down it. I don't want these days of sunshine to end. It's so nice. =)

Workaholic
I've noticed that my lifestyle has been leading me to a life of work, stress, and more work. I realized that taking a day off work, or even thinking of taking a year off of school, would make me go slightly insane. If I have something due or an exam coming up, I can't seem to take a good break; I can't be at peace when I'm not doing something.
I've noticed it with watching TV or movies. I always need my laptop with me, or have some notes in front of me because I can't just sit and watch. Something is always eating at the back of my brain.
I was given the opportunity to take a year off and I couldn't bring myself to do it. What would I do for a year? I would be miserable! That's when I realized that there may be something wrong with that. Most people would embrace the idea of taking a year off to just relax and enjoy life. Why can't I? Am I that addicted to studying? That without studying I feel as though I am nothing? Does anybody else feel this way? Am I on my way to becoming a workaholic?
